Basement Bakehouse


Basement Bakehouse is a small, independent bakery tucked away on Constitution Hill, just a short walk from the historic conservation areas of Windmill Hill. Built on a foundation of craft and quality, the bakery takes a no-nonsense approach to good bread. Their focus is on honest, handmade food made with proper ingredients — sourdough with depth, bakes with precision, and everything crafted with care.

Founded by Liam and Andrea, who first met in 2014 on the Gravesend theatre scene, but then their paths took them in different directions. Andrea, originally from Boston, MA, returned to the U.S. in 2017, where she rose to Chief Nursing Officer in community health, and Liam stayed in the UK, putting his background in plant physiology to work within the food and drink industry, quietly nurturing his dream of opening a bakery one day.

In 2024, Andrea returned to the UK to be close to her growing family, and with Liam already renovating a bakery kitchen in the home he shares with his partner, Ben, it was the perfect opportunity for a fresh start and shared passion for hand-crafted food. They have been opening every Saturday since July 2024.

At the heart of their mission is creating a community around honest, handmade food combined with their shared love of bringing people together over good food. They love it when people bring someone visiting to the bakery to share their baked treats.

They have recently launched their website www.basementbakehouse.co.uk, which will give you all the information you need about them and also give you the chance to pre-order these delicious treats.

They are always evolving. Their specials menu shifts with the seasons, making the most of what’s fresh and at its best. Expect an ever-changing lineup of breads and bakes, from fruit-laden buns in the summer to spiced, hearty flavours in the colder months.

This bakery is a bit of a local secret, open only on Saturday mornings from 9 am to 12 pm — but well worth seeking out.
